Warm Season to Cool Season Grasses

Are you tired of dealing with dying grass in the fall, or a slow growing lawn in late spring? The problem might be caused by your choice of grass. At Arbor-Nomics, we provide high quality, professional lawn care services for property owners in Atlanta, Georgia and nearby metro area communities. While grass health can decline for many reasons, one often overlooked cause is choosing a cool season variety in a warm climate or a warm season grass in a cool climate. Here are some tips on how to determine which variety of grass is perfect for your needs.

Does the Variety of Your Grass Matter?
Many property owners are not aware that the variety of grass grown on their lawn is a very important factor to consider. Grass seeds are available in two different categories, warm season and cool season. Knowing which kind of grass your property has will help you make the best choices to care for that specific species. Planting a cool season grass such as Fescue in a very hot environment or growing warm season Bermuda grass in cold Northern climates is not ideal.

Warm Season vs Cool Season Grasses in the Atlanta, GA Area
The Atlanta, Georgia area spans two different hardiness zones. Depending on where your property is located, you could be in either zone 7 or zone 8. There are three different types of grass that generally grows very well in the Atlanta area, specifically Zoysia, Fescue and Bermuda. Fescue is a cool season grass, while Bermuda and Zoysia are both warm season grasses. Each variety has its own benefits and drawbacks, so you will need to consider the factors discussed below.

Determining Which Is Best for Your Lawn
In addition to choosing between cool or warm season grass, it is also important to think about other relevant characteristics of each variety of grass. Fescue does not like heat but will grow well in shaded areas. Bermuda is a hardy variety and can handle a lot of traffic. It is also tolerant to drought but requires an abundance of sunlight to stay healthy long term. Zoysia does well in both partial shade and sunny areas, however it will need to be watered more often than Bermuda. If you are having a difficult time deciding on the right type of grass, then speak with our friendly staff. Our Certified Landscape Specialists can help you determine which kind of grass will work best for your unique lifestyle and environmental conditions.
