FAQs

Click on a topic, below, or scroll through to get answers to the questions Atlanta commonly asks about lawn care and our service.

Lawn Discoloration

I’m noticing brown patches in my Fescue lawn. What are they and what can I do about them?

This is most likely brown patch disease, which is caused by a fungus. It typically shows up in Fescue during warm, humid weather and needs to be treated with a fungicide. However, a proper diagnosis should be made before any fungicide or other treatment is applied.

If you are on one of our lawn care programs, a Certified Landscape Specialist can make a free service call to diagnose the problem and recommend an appropriate treatment.

What are those small light-colored spots showing up in my lawn?

This fits the description of dollar spot disease. The fungal disease first shows up as tan or silver spots roughly the size of a silver dollar and can quickly spread. It can be treated with a specific fungicide; treatment with the right fertilizer is also often effective.

If you are on one of our lawn care programs, one of our Certified Landscape Specialists can make a free service call to diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Weeds

Why do I still have weeds even though my lawn has been treated?

After a treatment, it can take broadleaf weeds, like dandelions, about two weeks to completely die off. If the leaves begin browning and withering, you can tell the treatment is working.

However, some stubborn weeds require treatment with specific herbicides. In the Atlanta area, these include nutsedge and Virginia buttonweed. If you have a problem with these, or any persistent weed, request a service call. One of our Certified Landscape Specialists will evaluate the problem and provide an estimate for treatment.

Other Lawn Issues

How do I get my lawn to look like a golf course?

Golf courses are maintained by full-time greenskeepers – specially trained experts who ensure the course is meticulously mowed two or three times a week, irrigation is perfectly regulated, and special treatments are applied exactly as needed. These are just a few of the continuous maintenance tasks involved.

Most homeowners are neither willing to pay for that kind of maintenance nor equipped to do it themselves. Those who try to take on the task typically fertilize too much, which makes the lawn prone to diseases. Professional residential lawn care is an affordable way of getting a healthy, beautiful lawn.

Why is my lawn pulling up in sections?

This is a sign of a problem with grubs, which feed on the roots of grass. Another indication of a grub infestation is the presence of moles, which feed on the grubs. The moles make tunnels that result in the tufts of turf you’re seeing.

We apply a grub preventative in August for customers who have requested the service. However, anyone who notices grubs, moles, or pulled-up tufts of turf should call us as soon as possible. We can treat regardless of the month.

How much water does my lawn need?

Between rain and irrigation, lawns need an inch of water per week to stay green and healthy. You can tell if your lawn needs water using a soil probe. Simply push a screwdriver or spike into the soil. If the probe pushes through easily, there’s enough soil moisture. If you get resistance, the soil is dry and you’ll need to water. Always irrigate in one or two sessions of deep watering rather than frequent light watering.

What’s the best grass for the Atlanta area?

Bermuda and Zoysia, warm-season grasses, and Fescue, a cool-season grass, are all good choices for metro Atlanta. Sodded Bermuda, however, does not tolerate any shade, so it is not a good option for yards with lots of trees or where houses are very close to each other.

Our Lawn Care Service

Does your lawn care service include mowing?

We don’t mow or install sod. Our lawn care focuses on fertilization and weed control, along with add-on services like aeration and treatments to control mosquitoes and other pests.

What types of lawns do you treat?

We treat Bermuda, Zoysia, and Fescue lawns. These three grasses are popular throughout metro Atlanta because they do well in our region.

How often will you treat my yard?

Our programs for lawn care and ornamental tree and shrub care both include eight visits per year, spaced about eight weeks apart. With year-round care, we’re able to meet the seasonal needs of turf, trees, and shrubs.

How soon can I mow my lawn after a treatment?

You should wait until any wet application has dried. Drying time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, and intensity of sunlight. So long as the lawn is dry, it’s fine to mow.

It rained right after a treatment. Will the treatment still work?

Rainfall can actually enhance the efficacy of fertilizers and weed controls. It helps nutrients sink into the soil and travel down to the root system. It also activates the pre-emergent weed control we use to prevent grassy weeds.

What should I do if I notice a problem between your regular visits?

Never wait until the next visit to bring a problem to our attention. Both our lawn care and our lawn, tree, and shrub care programs include free service calls between regular visits. Contact us as soon as you notice a problem to request a service call. One of our Certified Landscape Specialists will check it out and recommend any needed treatment.

Why did my treatment only take five minutes?

It takes only a few minutes to treat the average lawn, which is about 6,000 square feet. Our sprayers and spreaders are calibrated to deliver the products we use at at a specified rate.

My lawn goes dormant in the winter. Why do you continue to treat it?

We treat warm-season grasses (Bermuda and Zoysia) in the fall and winter to prevent grassy weeds from germinating and to maintain optimal soil pH. These treatments help your lawn emerge green and weed-free in the spring.

If I use your lawn care service, am I locked in by a contract?

No, we never ask any of our customers to sign a contract. We’re confident they’ll choose to stay with us because of the great results we achieve for their lawns.

How do I pay my bill online?

Click on “My Account” in the upper right of your screen. There you can set up your Arbor-Nomics account and pay your bill securely.

What happens if I’m not happy with the results I see in my lawn?

Arbor-Nomics offers our customers a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If you’re ever unhappy with the results of one of our lawn or ornamental tree and shrub treatments, we’ll evaluate the situation and, if needed, re-treat, at no cost. If you’re still not satisfied, we’ll refund the cost of the original treatment.
