Easy Winter Yard Tips

It can be easy to neglect your lawn maintenance over the winter, when grass and plants are dry and dormant. Despite its outward appearance, your yard still needs a little tender love and care, no matter what season it is. At Arbor-Nomics, we enjoy helping local property owners find ways to care for their grass and lawn. We provide a wide range of quality lawn care services for home and business owners in Atlanta, Georgia, and we want to help you achieve the same great results as our local clients. Are you wondering what actions you can take to improve your lawn’s health over the winter? Here are a few helpful tips.

Clean Out Gutters and Downspouts
Leaves, tree branches, bird’s nests and other debris quickly find their way into exposed gutter systems. The fall season can contribute heavily to the accumulation of these materials. If left inside your gutters and downspouts, these items can create major clogs. Since your gutter system is designed to carry water from your roof safely away from your home and landscaping, it’s important to keep it cleaned and well maintained. Otherwise, pools of water could form on your lawn, which may drown grass or freeze roots in some areas.

Tread Lightly
Blades of grass can become much more brittle over winter. Be careful not to harm your lawn with frequent traffic. Avoid walking on the lawn during this time as much as possible and stick to sidewalks and garden pathways.

Adjust Your Sprinkler System
Some homeowners shut off their irrigation system completely from November through February. While this may be a necessity for people living in frigid northern climates, those who live in warm regions can continue watering their lawns all year long. Of course, it can be easy to overwater grass during this time, so adjust your sprinkler’s settings accordingly. Also, always avoid watering when the temperature has dipped below 40 degrees. Be sure to check for signs of frost on the ground after a cold night.

Protect Plants from Hungry Animals
Food can be very scarce for wild animals in the winter, particularly in rural communities. Mice, rabbits, deer and other creatures may devour your tree bark, shrubs and perennials. Take proper precautions to avoid damage. Commonly used solutions include repellent sprays, fences and other physical pest barriers, reflectors, security lights and motion activated sprinklers. You may need to experiment to see what works best for your property.
