We’re at the start of a brand new year, a great time to plan gardening and landscaping for the months ahead. Read on for our breakdown of what and when to plant in your Atlanta garden.
- January: While January is mostly about maintenance and preparation, if the weather is milder by the end of the month, you Georgia planting season can start with pansies or English daisies for some color in your flower beds. If you’re looking to plant vegetables, mid-January is an ideal time to plant leafy greens, broccoli, cabbage, radishes, and turnips.
- February: Plant sweet peas now and reap a fragrant reward later. Also try winter daphne for lovely, fragrant blossoms. Vegetables like English peas, onions, and garlic should do well by springtime if planted now.
- March: Add beets, cauliflower, radishes, and turnips to your garden, if you haven’t already. This is also an ideal time to add pruning, aerating, and fertilizing to your Atlanta lawn care regimen. Give us a call—we can help your warm season grass benefit from aerating.
- April: Since the soil is warming, the Georgia planting season for tomatoes and peppers is here! To welcome spring, plant Easter lilies that will please your eyes and nose later. By the end of the month, plant seeds for flowers like zinnias and cosmos so that you can reap their rewards in early summer. Dahlias and gladiolus should also thrive when planted this month.
- May: For even more color in your garden, plant begonias and petunias to enjoy all summer. Love fresh herbs in recipes or atop a salad? Now is the time to plant rosemary, basil, oregano, and dill. Add to your meal options by planting more vegetables this month—beans, peas, and squash, to name a few.
- June: June is about maintenance and enjoying some of your crops! At this point, your early plants should be providing you with vegetables and beautiful flowers. Make sure your gardens are mulched, and check your lawn for diseases like brown patch and dollar spot. Water your lawn at least an inch per week.
- July:If your grass needs some TLC, call us at 770.447.6037. July is the opportune Geoegia planting season for Bermuda and Zoysia sod in bare spots, if you have them. Pay attention to pruning and weeding and continue enjoying the fruits of your labor!
- August: Even though it is still hot out, it’s already time to think about fall planting. August is a good time to plant fall crocus and sternbergia.
- September: By mid-month, plant cool-weather vegetables like broccoli, collards, and cabbage for your fall garden. This is also a good time to plant shrubs and trees since the weather will soon cool off.
- October: October is a busy month for all kinds of planting. It is also an ideal time to aerate and overseed your Fescue lawn. Call us to get on the schedule. Plant pansies eight inches apart and watch them bloom through the winter. Mid-month is the time to prepare spring flowers. Plant bulbs like tulips, daffodils, and hyacinth.
- November: If you didn’t get around to planting spring bulbs in October, November is not too late. Tulips and daffodils are a great option. November is also an ideal month to plant shrubs and trees since the soil is mild.
- December: Don’t forget to water your new shrubs and trees, and prepare your lawn for the temperatures to drop even more. Bring some of your plants indoors to protect pthem from the seasonal changes. This month, plant woody vines like Carolina jessamine and wisteria to enjoy throughout the winter.
